Bali is the most touristed island in Southeast Asia, visited by millions every year. And yet most never truly see it. Beneath the surface of yoga retreats, rice terrace selfies, and beach clubs, an orthodox Hindu culture lives on with extraordinary force. Birth ceremonies, tooth filings, cremations, daily offerings, temple festivals, a ritual calendar so dense it shapes every aspect of daily life. This is a long-term photographic work in progress. It aims to capture how Bali has not only survived a century of outside pressure but deepened in response to it, making the island a kind of global exception.
